Shit I’m Bumpin’

In my first post, I neglected to address why I chose the name “Tip of the Iceberg” to promote my blog. Other than the fact that I have several social media accounts under differing variation of the nickname “Icy Berg”- a name which, in case you couldn’t tell, I gave myself in high school-see how “Icy” I was here– I felt the name embodied what I seek to express by creating this blog. There is no real focus or genre to this blog, at least at the moment. Most of the ideas for my posts are drawn from my daily thoughts, impacted by interactions with coworkers, friends, strangers, and various forms of media I consume on a daily basis. This is not a journal. I don’t want to speak solely about my personal background. This is not a newspaper. I do not want to summarize and convey current events and issues. I want to give readers an insight into what I think about or find interesting or stimulating. On top of that, I felt I needed a casual way to express ideas and thoughts. Sure, I could write a long, thoughtfully crafted, meticulously planned research paper or op-ed piece about a topic that arouses me mentally, but even I wouldn’t take the time to sit, read, and connect with something as long and carefully edited and adapted as that. I don’t want to constantly be worrying about changing my writing style to appease a certain demographic or always have another tab open to search for synonyms to make myself sound more distinguished than I really am. Abbreviated (or condensed) content that people can engage with for a short period of time is my goal. The tip. Know that I could continue with this one particular topic, but that would take away time from the countless other topics I hope to explore and dissect.

But I digress…

With coronavirus taking the world by storm, I’m trying to keep myself active any way I can, but late at night when I’m drained from my one long walk of the day and am slightly inebriated, I gotta just let the vibes sink in. Some of the shit I’m bumpin’ is an escape, some of it keeps me grounded, and some of it is just provides new energy. See the shit I’m currently bumpin’ below.

“Turks”, NAV & Gunna ft. Travis Scott

Honestly, I find the NAV slander hilarious. He has a unique sound that fits with the dark emo rap style that has taken hip hop by storm in the past five years, but the idea of an Indian rapper just doesn’t seem to sit well with some of rap’s most powerful influencers, artists, and fans. He’s also kind of chubby, from Toronto, and has beef with 6ix9ine’s personal teddy bear, DJ Akademiks. However, all jokes aside, he has some bangers, and Turks is the latest. Hearing NAV spit over a stronger, heavier beat while assisted by two of the best in the game at the moment is a welcome sight.

Favorite lyric: “I’m a late bloomer third year on the scene/Twenty racks don’t feel like nothin to me” #latebloomergang

“Bean (Kobe)”, Lil Uzi Vert ft. Chief Keef

Eternal Atake/LUV vs. The World 2 brought the heat, but wasn’t the classic I was expecting. Bean brings Uzi’s much needed positive energy but adds a twist with a dope Chief Keef feature over a beat co-produced by Keef and Pi’erre Bourne. I could listen to this while taking a shower and then later while throwin’ bows at the club. An extremely versatile piece of art.

Favorite lyric: Literally anything Keef says. If I had to pick, I’d go with “The bitch staring at me/ Got real big titties/What’s in my jeans? Them real big fifties” and the ensuing lines as well. Effortless.

“Gummy”, Loud Luxury ft. Brando

From the minds that brought the slapper “Body” comes another pop-EDM track with hella good vibes. “Gummy” isn’t the coolest sounding word to use in a hook, but hey, music trends are pretty unpredictable. It’s one of four songs from the recent Nights Like This EP they released and while I doubt it will reach popularity levels of previous top tracks, it hits for now.

Favorite lyric: “whip so foreign need a green card” -didn’t even know this was a lyric but my only other option was literally just “wrap around like a gummy”

“Heartless”, The Weeknd

The deluxe album has already released but Heartless still takes the cake as my favorite song off After Hours. It has the same spooky aura as other tracks, but at a faster pace with more aggressive lyrics to complement the constant theme of pain and sorrow. Don’t listen to this song when you’re heartbroken and in your feelings. Cue it up when the tears have dried and you’re motivated for revenge.

Favorite lyric: “I been dodgin’ death in the six-speed/Amphetamines got my stummy feelin sickly” solely because he said “stummy” and still managed to sound hard af

“Booty Bounce Bopper”, The Pack

An oldie but a goodie. Found this lil’ 2005 drop on comedian Ian Fidance’s Instagram story recently and GAWDAMN. For those who live under a rock and eat their own shit because they have ~no taste~, The Pack was a SoCal-based hip hop group including none other than the BasedGod himself, Lil B. Booty Bounce Bopper is upbeat and funky, there’s no denying that.

Favorite lyric: “Wolfpack make ya booty bounce bopper/Bend, breath, stretch, bitch let it go”. The chorus is really the only part I focus on because I’m too turnt to hear the verses.
